Overview
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) is seeking law students interested in environmental law or government contracting. This opportunity will be sponsored by the DOE-SRS Office of Chief Counsel (OCC) and managed through the DOE Scholars Program.
Under the mentorship of the OCC, the Scholar will carry out legal research in a variety of areas practiced by the OCC including environment, ethics, contracts, EEO, FOIA/Privacy Act, workers compensation, and PILT (payment in lieu of taxes). Additionally, the Scholar will attend meetings with the OCC line organization customers for information gathering and development of legal advice, draft legal writings to include motions, memos, and may participate in litigations, including administrative litigations. When opportunities arise the Scholar will attend mediations and court proceedings.
The Scholar will be expected to research and write a memorandum of law on a legal issue pertinent to OCC’s current work. The exact topic will be mutually agreed upon.
Learning Objectives
- Learn how to develop legal strategy and related legal support and report to DOE’s missions at SRS.
- Research legal and other topics and provide a concise summary of results to OCC attorneys. This project will give the Scholar an opportunity to complete a writing sample that will benefit future job seeking efforts.
