The Energy Communities AmeriCorps VISTA project is an innovative public-private partnership that will place more than 150 full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members in nine federally designated energy communities. Over the next three years, Energy Communities AmeriCorps will invest more than $7.8 million from federal agencies and philanthropic sources to develop and implement locally designed economic development, environmental cleanup and energy transition plans in energy communities experiencing job loss and economic dislocation.

The project is sponsored by Conservation Legacy, a longstanding AmeriCorps partner with extensive experience working in energy communities. This partnership is part of the American Climate Corps (ACC), a skills-based workforce training and service initiative that will mobilize a new, diverse generation of more than 20,000 Americans to tackle the climate crisis while building skills for quality jobs.

VISTA members will serve in Appalachian Ohio, Eastern Kentucky, the Illinois Coal Basin, the Four Corners region, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wyoming, Virginia and Southeast Montana.

VISTA members will be recruited to serve energy communities that align with the Interagency Working Group on Coal and Power Plant Communities and Economic Revitalization (Energy Communities IWG) Rapid Response Teams. The local host site will work with the project sponsor to recruit and select the VISTA members. Recruiting displaced energy workers or their family members to serve in these positions is a top priority. The members will live and serve in the community, helping energy communities attract and retain the talent they need to support their economic development goals.
